The State of Florida developed a statewide strategy to prevent targeted violence in response to the public’s well-founded concern about a perceived increase in both the frequency and lethality of mass casualty attacks in the U.S. This strategy provides a baseline understanding of targeted violence and Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM). It also proposes to establish a regionalized BTAM program throughout the state. FDLE created this course in support of the statewide strategy. Salary Incentive or Mandatory Retraining. This course, also known as STEP, is prescribed by Florida Statute s. 316.640 and is designed as an overview of the knowledge and skills required to fulfill the responsibilities and duties of a civilian traffic accident investigator, also known as a traffic crash investigator. Even though individuals must successfully complete this course to perform the duties of a traffic crash investigator, the Commission does not certify these individuals. Furthermore, additional training is recommended to perform other duties not encompassed in this course, such as traffic control and first aid. This course will explain the legal, investigative, and follow-up aspects of responding to traffic crashes, which traffic crash investigators must comprehend as employees of police departments, sheriffs’ offices, or the Florida Highway Patrol. This 40-hour course was designed for the officer and investigator to review the methods of case preparation and court presentation. The course will provide information necessary to effectively prepare a criminal case for presentation before the court. (Salary incentive or Mandatory). You will need to provide two case packages about which you can testify for 10-15 minutes. You do not have to be the lead in the case, but it should be something of some complexity. If possible, please avoid using something that has not yet been resolved in the judicial system. You must provide these cases by Tuesday or you will be dismissed from the class.
